Natural Gas and Bio-Methane as Fuels for Transport

Natural gas offers important environmental benefits in terms of reduction of CO2 and pollutant emissions, in particular when it is blended with bio-methane.
Directive 2014/94/EU "on the deployment alternative fuels infrastructures" establishes a regulatory framework for Member States to promote alternative fuels such as natural gas as fuels for transport and to make the relevant infrastructure available. The TEN-T policy and its financial instrument Connecting Facility Fund (CEF) has been key to promote innovation in transport and to launch the build-up of EU infrastructures for the use of natural gas in transport.
The workshop on L-CNG aims to ascertain how the synergic effect of these EU policy actions can enhance the take-up of the alternatively fuelled transport systems' market and the competitiveness of the European industry, so as to promote economic growth and employment.

    Joint Workshop on innovation pipelines

This session is based on the pipeline concept presented at the general innovation session of Monday morning, and will, as a first example, establish a specific innovation pipeline for Hydrogen (H2) and Fuel Cell technology (FCH).
The implementing instrument is the joint innovation workshop, for which the Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking of the H2020 Programme becomes a partner of the TEN-T/CEF Programme, with the political objective to give H2 and FCH a strong coordinated push for its market roll-out on TEN-T, by proving that this new technology is ready for mass deployment.
The four facets of the workshop contain also a presentation of the European Investment Bank (EIB) adapting the new financial instruments of Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and Juncker Initiative to the specific needs of innovative projects as well as a breakout exhibition on H2 & FCH.

  • About Riga

As the 2014 European Capital of Culture, headquarters of the Latvian Presidency, and one of the most innovative cities of the Baltic region, Riga is definitively a city that you must discover!

Riga is the capital of Latvia and the largest city of the Baltic States with more than 640.000 inhabitants. This vibrant and lively city presents a mix of cultures and architectural styles and features a host of interesting quarters to explore such as the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the most innovative cities of the Baltic region, Riga has always been a dynamic and enterprising centre of activity. The Daugava, also referred to as the River of Destiny by Latvians, flows through the city into the Gulf of Riga.

Due to its key location, dense railroad network, excellent air transport connection and rarely frozen harbour, Riga has developed into a significant transportation hub.

In order to facilitate trade flows in the north-south direction, there are plans to implement a pan-Baltic railway route, Rail Baltica, connecting Tallinn–Riga–Kaunas–Warsaw–Berlin. This ambitious project would also serve as the first step in Latvia’s transition to European railway-gauge technical standards and will be one of the focal points of the Ten-T Days 2015.
